Merrill Publishing Associates was established in 2005 by a devoted railfan, Thomas Burg, and publishing professional, Sharon Thatcher, in Merrill, Wisconsin. Our collaboration was a natural solution for giving notice to the outstanding photo collection of Roy Campbell. The collection, owned by the Campbell family, includes a vast number of steam locomotive photos along with a much smaller collection of steamboat photos (ferries, cargo ships, passenger ships, etc.). Most are focused on lines that serviced the Midwestern U.S.
With limited funds available for our hobby venture, we originally started with photo CDs. When Tom sold 40 copies of our first product at a train meet, we were on our way.
We continued CDs but soon the demand for books led us into expanding our product line. Funds from the CDs and the availability of affordable digital publishing made it possible.
Our selected printer is DigiCopy. The custom and on-demand printing company was established in 2000 and has a store conveniently located in nearby Wausau, Wis.
DigiCopy has acquired equipment to do much of the printing work but also collaborates with a traditional printer to round out service demands. We have enjoyed a good working relationship with DigiCopy as they have grown to meet the needs of self publishers and as we have grown to embrace the opportunities now afforded to self publishers.
